TAFE School of
Engineering - Management Team
School Management Structure
Organisation
Chart (pdf format)
The School of Engineering in the Swinburne University TAFE Division
consists of six teaching teams operating across five campuses. The
composition of the teams is flexible to reflect the optimum operational
needs of the areas concerned. Therefore, some teams operate along
geographic lines whilst others are configured along discipline lines.
Four managers with school-wide functional responsibilities support
these teams. The Business Operations Manager oversees the administrative
staff and is responsible for efficient and effective service to
internal and external customers; the Performance and Development
Manager oversees the legislative and quality standards compliance
of the school, as well as new business development; the Teaching
and Learning Manager is responsible for the development, implementation
and quality of educational programs whilst the Teaching Operations
Manager supports the day to day operations of the team and manages
staff and teaching performance targets.
The Centre for New Manufacturing (CNM) is a specialist centre within
the school established following the 2002 Ministerial statement
“Knowledge and Skills for the Innovation Economy”. The
CNM works closely with industry and research groups to foster the
uptake of new and emerging technologies into training for Victorian
manufacturing and engineering sectors.
The teams and Matrix units have a high degree of autonomy but are
highly cooperative in their operation to ensure that the needs of
students, the team and the school are met. In the first instance,
responsibility for this rests with the four managers and ultimately
the School Director.
Carlo De Martinis
- School Director
Carlo
brings to the School of Engineering a wealth of knowledge and experience
in the energy and telecommunications sector of TAFE. He has held
several positions as Department and General Manager in other TAFE
institutes.
Carlo has a background in science education
with qualifications including a Master of Science, Bachelor of Education
and a Graduate Diploma in Occupational Hygiene. He retains a strong
interest in teaching and learning and has been instrumental in developing
many new courses for TAFE in such areas as laboratory sciences,
occupational health and safety, fire technology, disaster management,
environmental waste management and cleaner production. Carlo has
considerable experience in project management at both State and
National levels. His professional interests include innovative models
of teaching and learning and professional development of staff.
Carlo balances his busy working week with
an interest in his 20-acre property near Broadford north of Melbourne.
Carlo and his wife, Janet, purchased a bare paddock in 1991 and
undertook a major replanting exercise to stem the soil degradation
resulting from years of neglect. All is not work however, as a side
interest is a (very) small vineyard where he grows shiraz, cabernet
sauvignon and merlot grapes for his home winemaking hobby. Needless
to say he enjoys the fruits of his labour!

Ron Barrow - Manager,
Teaching Operations
Ron
has been working in the TAFE sector for some 20 years, teaching
and coordinating programs in the horticulture and environmental
sciences area including Oakleigh Technical School, Holmesglen Institute
of TAFE, Eastern TAFE and for the past few years with Swinburne.
He has had many interests and experiences in TAFE working with a
range of client groups including people with intellectual disabilities,
secondary schools, apprentices, diploma and degree students. Ron
has no formal engineering or electronics training but has been exposed
to the industry through his early life as a technical school student
and through his father and brothers influences who are all qualified
in the field. As a project officer with the Emergency Service Training
Initiative Unit, Ron honed his skills in project management for
the development of industry based training opportunities.
Ron brings to the School of Engineering
a wealth of experience in TAFE, Training Package delivery, flexible
delivery resource development and management skills.

Lorraine Banks - Executive
Assistant to Director
Lorraine
began her association with Eastern TAFE in 1990 working in Student
Administration for 5 years. Lorraine's main responsibilities at
this time were the annual awards ceremonies, major enrolment intakes
of students and curriculum maintenance on the TOMS system. Following
a 4-year period working in Community Programs and having a large
interaction with community houses and students throughout the inner
and outer eastern areas of Melbourne, a change in direction has
now seen Lorraine back in the Executive Assistant role working for
Carlo De Martinis, Director, TAFE School of Engineering. Lorraine
was employed with the SEC for 20 years in various areas, including
engineering, planning, training and personnel. This was a very exciting
time with the development of Loy Yang Power Station which had a
huge impact on all aspects of the SEC.
Lorraine is very involved in the sporting
