PRSSO206A Provide First Aid Course for Security and Mining Industries

arorw Purpose and Description

This course covers the skills and knowledge required to provide essential first aid.  Participants learn the skills to recognise and respond to an emergency using basic life support measures. The unit is based on Competency "A" in the National Guidelines for Integrating First Aid Competencies into National Industry Competency Standards.



arorw Performance Criteria

Assess the situation

  • Physical hazards to personal and others' health and safety are identified
  • Immediate risk to self and the casualty's health and safety are minimised by controlling the hazard

Apply basic first aid techniques

  • The casualty's vital signs and physical condition are assessed in accordance with first aid principles and organisational requirements
  • First aid treatment is provided in accordance with established first aid techniques and standards
  • The casualty is reassured in a caring and calm manner and made comfortable using available resources
  • Assistance or advice is sought from others in a timely manner and as appropriate
  • The casualty's condition is monitored and responded to in accordance with effective first aid principles and organisational requirements
  • Information on the casualty's physical condition, changes in condition, treatment and response issues are recorded.

Communicate details of the incident

    • Appropriate medical assistance is requested using relevant communication equipment
    • Details of the casualty's condition and casualty management activities are accurately conveyed to emergency services / relieving personnel
    • Incident observations are provided accurately and constructively when reviewing and debriefing situations
    • Operational records and reports are prepared presenting all relevant facts and information in accordance with legislative requirements

     


arorw Elements Considered in this Unit for Competency

Physical hazards

  • equipment and machinery
  • mechanical and electrical
  • environmental risks
  • body fluids
  • risk of further injury to the casualty and workers and bystanders

Checking casualties for vital signs:

  • breathing (EAR), circulation (CPR) and consciousness

Physical condition of casualty including:

  • abdominal injuries, allergic reactions, bleeding, burns-thermal, chemical, friction, electrical
  • cardiac conditions, chemical contamination, cold injuries, crush injuries, drowning, and venomation (snake, spider bites)
  • environmental conditions - hypothermia, dehydration, heat stroke
  • epilepsy, diabetes, asthma and other medical conditions
  • eye, head, minor skin, neck and spinal injuries, fractures, and wounds
  • poisoning and toxic substances, respiratory management of asthma and / or choking, shock, smoke inhalation
  • soft tissue injuries including sprains, strains, dislocations, substance abuse, including drugs
  • unconsciousness, including not breathing and no pulse
  • penetrations and perforations such as stab wounds  and firearm projectiles

First aid treatment including:

  • application of pressure bandages and application of splints
  • clearance of blocked air passages (nose and throat) and CPR
  • bandages and ties to sprained or broken limbs

Factors which could affect first aid treatment including:

  • hazardous environmental conditions (adverse weather, after dark, difficult terrain, debris, traffic, time pressure, security / safety issues)
  • varying time frames (short term, protracted response operations)
  • location of emergency services personnel
  • limited access to equipment and the use of improvised techniques

Recording and reporting

  • request for assistance forms and incident reports
  • security logs / journals and records of conversations

Organisational requirements related to:

  • legal and organisational policy and procedures including personnel practices and guidelines
  • organisational goals, objectives, plans, systems and processes
  • legislation relevant to the operation, incident and / or response
  • employer and employee rights and responsibilities
  • policies and procedures relating to own role, responsibility and delegation
  • quality and continuous improvement processes and standards
  • Occupational Health and Safety policies, procedures and programs
  • emergency and evacuation procedures
  • duty of care, code of conduct, code of ethics
  • access and equity policy, principles and practice

Established first aid techniques and standards

  • checking the site for danger to self, casualty and others and minimising the danger
  • checking and maintaining casualty's airway, breathing and circulation

Entry Requirements

  • No pre-requisites required. 


arorw Certification

A Statement of Attainment will be issued upon successful completion.  Participants who successfully complete this competency will gain credits towards a Certificate in OH&S offered by Swinburne.

3+ weeks prior to program: full refund. 2 weeks prior to program: fee refund less 25%, unless transferred to another COHST program. Less than 2 weeks: no refund, unless transferred to another COHST program. Swinburne University reserves the right to cancel courses at any time. In this case, money paid is fully refunded.
