Administer Oxygen in an Emergency Situation
PUAEME003B
Purpose and Description
This is a one day course covers advanced techniques for management of the administration of oxygen and ventilation of the lungs in line with the requirements of the Australian Resuscitation Council and State and Territory regulatory bodies. This course is designed for people involved in operations at the First Aid Room level or who are associated with and/or responsible for the delivery of oxygen therapy/resuscitation in the workplace. The course will enable participants to respond to life threatening emergencies assist victims of respiratory distress who may benefit from the administration of oxygen
Oxygen Equipment
This course offers participants knowledge and skills in the theory and practical operation of oxygen equipment. Course content is suitable for those seeking to extend skills gained in basic oxygen training and would be of particular value to people in the aquatic industry and others using oxygen equipment in the workplace.
Elements of Competency and Performance Criteria
Assess casualty and develop management plan (PUAEME003B/01)
- Assessment of casualty is undertaken including vital signs, details of incident, medical/casualty history, physical appearance and other signs and symptoms
- Management plan is developed taking into account available equipment, condition of patient and requirements of certain conditions
- Where possible casualty is assisted to a comfortable position suitable for implementation of management plan
- Casualty is encouraged and reassured as necessary to facilitate effective treatment
- Medical aid is arranged as soon as possible consistent with maintaining casualty safety
Check equipment (PUAEME003B/02)
- Pre-use check of safety and potential effectiveness of equipment is undertaken according to operating procedures
- Australian standards and regulatory requirements
- Minor faults are diagnosed and repairs are carried out in accordance with organisation procedures to restore equipment to working order
- Faults and defects are reported/recorded according to organisational procedures
Maintain unobstructed airway (PUAEME003B/03)
- Airway is cleared and maintained using non-intervention techniques where possible
- Appropriate steps are taken to reduce risk to self or others of contamination by the casualty's body fluids
- Where carried, suction apparatus is safely inserted into pharynx and suction initiated using approved techniques to avoid injuring casualty
Resuscitate casualty (PUAEME003B/04)
- Where appropriate face masks and other barriers are used according to ARC standards
Use oxygen to provide therapy (PUAEME003B/05)
- Where indicated, oxygen therapy is used in the ventilation of casualty
Recover and restore equipment (PUAEME003B/06)
Equipment is cleaned, and discarded or disinfected, restocked and/or replenished and stored safely according to organisation procedures
Certification
Participants who successfully complete
the course will be awarded Swinburne University of Technology approved
certification. The qualification lasts for one year.

3+ weeks prior to program: full refund.
2 weeks prior to program: fee refund less 25%, unless transferred to another COHST program.
Less than 2 weeks: no refund, unless transferred to another COHST program.
