The course also provides a pathway to Certificate III in Non-emergency client transport and Certificate IV in Health Care (Ambulance).

An Emergency Medical Responder (EMR) provides the first response care in line with Australian Resuscitation Council Guidelines. An EMR assess any dangers and controls these, in order to prevent additional injury to a patient. They are expected to rapidly assess whether there is any immediate life threat to the patient and if so to provide immediate emergency life support. Where there is no life-threat to the patient, the EMR must assess for any other major problems and initiate first aid, as appropriate, while waiting for the paramedics.

An EMR is expected to:

  • Relay information about the scene to the patient and the paramedics
  • Maintain an ethical approach to patient care
  • Respect patient confidentiality
