Skills Recognition
Credit or Skills Recognition?
Credit
If you have an academic transcript from a Registered Training Organisation showing an official result with the same code and unit name or with a different code which has similar elements, you need to apply for a credit. Discuss this with your Senior Educator.
Skills Recognition
Have you gained your skills through life or work? Read on to learn about the Skills Recognition process and see 'Steps for students' to take you through the process:
Skills Recognition, is the acknowledgment of skills and knowledge obtained through learning achieved outside the formal education and training system and includes work and life experience including paid and volunteer work and skills attained through leisure pursuits such as musical, mechanical or linguisitic abilities.
Skills Recognition recognises any prior knowledge and experience and measures it against the qualification. You may not need to complete all of a training program, if you already possess some of the competencies taught in the program.
Briefing
Before deciding whether you wish to apply for Skills Recognition for one or several units of competency, you need to assess your current competence.
A Self Assessment Checklist will be given to you which will enable an initial assessment of your experience and to check whether you will be able to demonstrate the required skills and knowledge. You may choose to discuss this with an Skills Recognition Assessor. The Senior Educator or enrolment officer can arrange this for you.
You must be able to provide evidence to prove that you are competent against the element/performance criteria for the relevant unit(s).
NOTE: It is possible to gain Skills Recognition for an entire qualification
Enrolment
Once you have decided to apply for Skills Recognition for a particular unit(s) you will need to enrol in the course you have chosen. It is important that you notify the enrolment officer of your intention to apply for Skills Recognition and nominate the selected units for Skills Recognition as this needs to be recorded on your enrolment form.
Planning Interview
You will then need to have an introductory interview with an Skills Recognition Assessor who will discuss your Self Assessment with you. You will also be provided with an Evidence Guide, which provides a more detailed description of the unit and suggests evidence that could be provided to demonstrate that you are competent in a particular unit or units of competency. At the interview, you can plan your approach to evidence collection and develop a schedule for submission of evidence.
Evidence Gathering
You will need to gather evidence and present it to an RPL Assessor.
See our Skills Recognition Student Guide for more information on evidence
Assessment Interview
The Skills Recognition Assessment interview will then take place. At that time, you and your Skills Recognition Assessor will discuss the evidence you have provided. You will be asked questions in order to clarify your understanding, establish your underpinning knowledge and, if necessary, decide upon any gap training that may be required.
Results
Your Assessor will give you feedback. If successful, he or she will process your results with Skills Recognition. If unsuccessful, (you are not able to demonstrate competence) your Assessor will discuss the options with you.
